KTM continues to improve its products with the latest advancements from international enduro racing. One example is the new 2015 KTM 450 XC-W. After putting it to the test during an entire weekend, it became clear that the Austrian manufacturer's “Ready to Race” slogan applies to this bike. Aesthetically, the 450 XC-W boasts an orange-painted frame and matte black spoke wheels that follow the recent trend. The lines are still super-stylish and aggressive, embodying a true race bike. The satin white fuel tank gets easily tarnished by rider's gear, but other than that I don't have any reservations about the design. Like an old friend I felt like I was reuniting with an old friend just 15 minutes in. The narrow frame of the 2015 KTM 450 XC-W makes weight transfers easy, although the hard seat requires some getting used to. Riding while seated is not so bad, but I definitely preferred standing on the oversized footrests and shifting my weight forward and over the wide, tapered handlebars to attack terrain. Everything was imagined and designed to give the rider total freedom, regardless of their style. The most impressive thing about the enduro-oriented 2015 KTM 450 XC-W is arguably the WP suspension. You really have to make a huge riding mistake to be caught off-guard. The 48mm upside-down fork and PDS shock, which seem too soft and too compliant at first, turn out to be incredibly competent for the job. The machine flies over obstacles (rocks, tree stumps, dirt bumps, roots and ruts) like a magic carpet. The WP arsenal worked wonders while climbing a long, sweeping trail covered in 90% rock and other debris. The 2015 KTM 450 XC-W overcame most of the rough stuff with disconcerting ease, showing no jerky moves and very little deviation. Powerful and easy to exploit Since 2012, the KTM 450 XC-W has relied on a new SOHC single-cylinder engine. Key upgrades for this year result in superior mid-range torque and a longer useable powerband. The list includes a new cylinder head with redesigned, polished intake and exhaust ports. You get 47 hp at 8, 400 rpm and 31.8 lb-ft of torque at 7, 200 rpm - all delivered in civilized fashion. This is remarkable for a single-cylinder that's designed to operate for several hours in a row in extreme heat and pressure conditions. Kudos for the exhaust system, which maintains noise levels at 91 decibels. What's more, all vital components are effectively protected from dirt and impacts except the fuel tank line that is too exposed in the event of a fall (see photo gallery).

If that happens to you a lot, and your commute is across open fields and through the woods, you might want to consider the Polaris Sportsman WV850 HO with Terrain Armor. This military-grade All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) abandons traditional inflatable tires for Non-Pneumatic Tires (NPT) that feature a flexible polymer honeycomb. Airless tires have been around in one form or another for a long time. The US military already uses them, the Apollo astronauts rode on them in their Lunar Rovers, some wheelchairs and special security vehicles have them, and they’re positively ancient when you consider that horse-drawn carts have run on iron tires for centuries. According to the Minneapolis-based Polaris, its Polaris Defense division began offering its NPT tires to the US military as an optional extra this year. What is new with the WV850 HO is that the technology originally developed so that a Humvee could make it back to base after taking an AK47 burst in the wheels is now moving into the civilian market. “In early, 2013, Polaris announced we’d launch the NPT technology on an off-road vehicle built for consumers, ” said David Longren, vice president of Polaris’ Off-Road Division. “We have seen great success with NPTs in military and disaster relief scenarios and are excited to bring this technology to the consumer market for extreme work applications.” NPTs have a number of advantages over inflatable tires. For one thing, they never go flat, don’t suffer from punctures, cuts, slashes, or outright bursting. This not only means not having to change tires unless one is almost destroyed, but that a spare no longer needs to be carried. To prove how rugged its NPTs are, Polaris subjected them to fire from .50 caliber, M4, and AK47 rounds, then used them in logging over a distance of 350 mi (563 km), Then they drove a 3-in (7, 6 -cm) railway spike into one and drove it 1, 000 mi (1609 km). According to the company, the NPT also has a better center-of-gravity and takes corners better than conventional tires.

Honda Rancher VIN Location – New Honda Ranchers have the VIN located on a crossmember at the front of the ATV which is visible through the opening in the front cowl or plastics. A flashlight should be all you need to see into this opening to read the VIN as you can see in this image. General Honda ATV VIN Location – Another polular location for Honda ATV VINs is located on a front crossmember which is usually behind the front rack. It can be difficult to see if you have an aftermarket winch or custom skid plates but it can usually be uncovered fairly easily. Honda Side by Side UTV VIN Location – The vin on Honda’s side by side utility vehicles is located underneath the hood on the driver’s side. It can be seen on the lower frame rail facing upwards. Fact: an ATV 17 digit VIN number will never be located on the engine, engines have their own 7-10 digit numbers that are not related to VIN numbers, don’t confuse the two. Those of you who have visited the Zenith factory lately have noticed the larger bald tires on our STOL CH 750 demonstrator. We've been testing these "off airport" tires this past month and are quite pleased with the results. These affordable (non aviation) ATV tires are smooth and treadless (21x12-8) measuring about 21-inches tall. Mounted on an 8-inch Matco wheel, these larger tires raise the height of the airplane by close to 2-inches. We did not change the standard nosewheel (continuing to use an 18-inch tire). The standard tires (shown above) supplied in the kit measure about 18-inches tall, and are mounted on 6-inch Matco wheels). This ATV tire that should meet the needs of most sport pilots wanting good off-airport capability, without the weight and cost of the larger Alaskan Bushwheel AIRSTREAK tires. (Do note that these Airstreak tires do provide much better off-airport capability to those that do need it). We like the look of these new tires on the STOL CH 750! The tires are Nanco N800 21x12.00-8. We bought ours through Infinity Powered Parachutes, but they can also be purchased online through gearworksracing.com or ATVtires.net. These larger tubeless 21-inch ATV tires make landings and taxiing smoother on grass or dirt fields (with 5 - 10 PSI), and other non-prepared landing strips such as beaches. (Note that these tread-less tires are not made for paved runways). We've only noticed a slight decrease in cruise performance (2 to 5 mph).
